M.D. Assistant Professor, Akdeniz University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Antalya/TURKEY The superficial layers of retina are nourished by central retinal artery, whereas deep layers by choroid. Both sources arise from the branches of ophthalmic artery. Cilioretinal artery, which occurs in approximately 20% of the population, arises from choroid and supplies blood to a part of macula. Retinal capillary bed supplies the communication between arterial and venous systems and is important in autoregulation. Foveal avascular zone, the area adjacent to arterial walls and the extreme periphery of the retina are avascular. There is an efficient autoregulation in retinal circulation, and retina maintains a relatively stable blood flow during changes in perfusion pressure. Keywords : Retina, central retinal artery, macula
