Central Retinal Vein Occlusion
M.D. Professor, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara/TURKEY
Central retinal vein occlusion is a common vascular disease of the retina. Its complications like ischemia, macular edema, neovascularization and neovascular glaucoma may result in visual loss. Laser photocoagulation is the main treatment for neovascularization. For macular edema recently new treatments became available. Macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusions is a significant complication affecting the vision. With intravitreal antiVEGF agents and corticosteroids edema decreases and the vision increases. However these drugs have limited time of efficacy, they need to be repeated. Cataract and increased intraocular pressure side effects of corticosteroids should be kept in mind.
