Materials and Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively. Infants treated with laser photocoagulation and/or intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) for ROP, in 2014 between January 1 and December 31, were included. Infants born in our hospital were collected in Group 1 (n=49), while those sent from other hospitals in Group 2 (n=17). Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the groups.
Results: A total of 132 eyes of 66 infants were treated for retinopathy of prematurity. It was applied laser photocoagulation after anti-VEGF injections to 8 eyes (6.0%) of 4 infants; only laser photocoagulation to 124 eyes (94.0%) of 62 infants. In 2014, the treatment rate in infants from ROP screening was 5%. Mean gestational age of infants was 26.3±2.3, birth weight was 883±300 g. Mean gestational age (p=0.07) and birth weight (p=0.01) of Group 1 was significantly lower than in Group 2. Mean postmenstrual week at first occurrence of ROP was calculated only for Group 1 and found 33.0±1.7. Between groups 1 and 2, mean postmenstrual week of laser photocoagulation (p=0.149) and the mean laser shots (p=0.935) were not statistically different.
Conclusion: In our hospital, 5% of infants in ROP screening needed a treatment in 2014. It was remarkable that the height of gestational age and birth weight of the infants sent from other hospitals, the presence of requiring vitreo-retinal surgery.
