Low gestational age and birth weight are the main known risk factors for ROP. Nowadays, the numbers of sight-threatening complications associated with ROP have been reduced by understanding pathophysiology of ROP, new screening tools, and novel treatment options. In this review, the current epidemiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors of ROP have been evaluated to better understand underlying mechanisms of ROP.
