4Uz. Dr., Zeynep Kamil Kadın ve Çocuk Hastalıkları Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi Göz Hastalıkları Kliniği, İstanbul - TÜRKİYE Purpose: To investigate effect of pretreatment choroidal thickness on intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) treatment in age related macular degeneration (ARMD) patients.
Materials and methods: Thirty-nine patients with exudative ARMD had 3 times IVB injections with 1 month interval. Corrected visual acuity (CVA), fovea altı choroidal thickness (SFCT), central macular thickness (CMT) measurements and ocular examinations were performed before and after 3 monthly IVB injections. Patients having>100 ?m decrease in CMT after 3 monthly IVB injections were accepted as responsive (Group1) while the others were accepted as non-responsive (Group2).
Results: There were 18(46.2%) male, 21(53.8%) female patients with a mean age of 71.49±6.27 years (60-83 years). Before IVB injections SFCT was 239.82±43.83 ?m in Group1 and, 172.06±28.22 ?m in Group2. After 3 monthly IVB injections SFCT was 208.41±41.65 ?m in Group1 and 164.18±20.72 ?m in Group2. Before IVB injections CVA was 0.80±0.46 logMAR in Group1 and 1.12±0.62 logMAR in Group2. After 3 monthly IVB injections CVA was 0.55±0.40 logMAR in Group1 and 0.99±0.63 logMAR in Group2. SFCT measurements were higher in Group1 than Group2 both pretreatment and after 3 monthly IVB injections (respectively p:0.001,p:0.001). Decrease in SFCT and improvement in CVA were higher in Group1 than Group2 after 3 monthly IVB injections (respectively p:0.001,p:0.011).There was a negative correlation between SFCT and CVA for pretreatment measurements and after 3 monthly IVB injection measurements (respectively p:0.001,p:0.001).
Conclusion: There was a correlation between pretreatment SFCT and effectiveness of IVB treatment. Pretreatment choroidal thickness may have effect on IVB treatment of ARMD patients.
