DIODE LASER TRANSSCLERAL RETINOPEXY IN RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY
SSK İstanbul Eğitim Hastanesi, Göz Kliniği
Conventional retinal detachment surgery and transscleral diode laser retinopexy was performed on 52 eyes of 52 patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment of 22 female, 30 male aging between 12 and 74 in SSK İstanbul Hospital Ophthalmology Department between May 1997 and August 1998. The follow-up period of the eyes was 3-15, on average 7 months. Thirtysix (69%) of 52 eyes are still reattached by single operation and the chorioretinal scars are apparent in 34 of them. Additional laser photocoagulation was performed in two cases in postoperative period. Retinal reattachment was achieved after the second operation with exoplant revision and transscleral laser retinopexy in 6 (11%) cases. Ten (19%) cases with severe PVR reattached by vitreoretinal surgery.Diode laser retinopexy is a good alternative to other retinopexy methods, with accurate lesion location by the aiming beam, easy transmission through extraocular muscles and solid silicone buckling elements, immediate and permanent laser marks on the retina and choroid layer, not easily skipping sections around the lesion, reduced unnecessary or overtreatment inducing PVR and lesser postoperative inflammation than customary cryotherapy and as a result is an easily performed procedure with favourable results.
