PEROPERATIVE AND POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS OF PARS PLANA VITRECTOMY OPERATIONS

This study evaluated the etiology, peroperative and postoperative complications and additional surgical procedures in 115 eyes of 115 cases who underwent pars plana vitrectomy in our clinic between March 1996 and June 1997. The mean age of patients was 57.8 years (range 5-85 years). Of 115 patients 62 and 53 patients were males and females respectively. The patients were followed up for two to 15 months, with a mean follow up period of 8.8 months. Diagnoses included retinal detachment (n=52, 45.2%), vitreous hemorrhage (n=37, 32.2%), foreign body in the eye (n=12, 10.4%), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (n=11, 9.6%), previous endophthalmitis (n=2, 1.7%), and retinal dialysis (n=1, 0.9%). Peroperative complications included iatrogenic retinal tears (n=11, 9.6%), injury to the lens (n=3, 2.6%), minimal vitreous hemorrhage (n=13, 11.3%), retinal incarceration (n=2, 1.7%), and escape of vitreon to the subretinal space (n=1, 0.9%), choroidal detachment (n=2, 1.7%). Early postoperative complications were corneal edema (n=10, 8.7%), grefon edema (n=1, 0.9%), residual cortex (n=1, 0.9%), vitreous hemorrhage (n=4, 3.5%), minimal cataract (n=6, 5.2%), advanced cataract (n=6, 5.2%), minimal retinal detachment (n=5, 4.3%), choroidal detachment (n=3, 2.6%), increased intraocular pressure (n=29, 25.2%), fibrinous reaction (n=10, 8.7%), lens zonule rupture (n=1, 0.9%), retinal incarceration (n=2, 1.7%), formation of perisilicone membrane (n=1, 0.9%) and neovascular glaucoma (n=2, 1.7%).
