CONVENTIONAL RETINA DETACHMENT SURGERY IN DEGENERATIVE MYOPIC CASES
Çukurova Üniversitesi Göz Hast. ABD.
We retrospectively investigated 54 cases with degenerative myopia who underwent conventional surgery method because of retinal detachment between April 1989-December 1995 at Çukurova University Medical Faculty, Ophtalmology Department Retina-Vitreous Unit. The study group consisted of 18 female and 36 male cases with a mean age of 43.9±14.2 (14-80) years. The period between the occurrence of retinal detachment and the admittance to the clinic was mean 32.9±19.7 (2-180) days. In 46 cases (85.1%) the tears were found to be associated with retinal detachment. The mean postoperative follow up period was 14.9±9.6 (8-29) months. We observed chemosis in 2, corneal edema in 1 and increased intraocular pressure in 1 case in the postoperative period and they all improved with medical treatment. We detected transient diplopia in 1 and macular edema in 2 cases, and during the follow up period remission occured spontaneously. Retina was found to be subsieded in 47 cases (87%) whereas retinal detachment reccurved in 7 cases (13%). We observed degenerative myopia without retinal detachment in 47 fellow eyes of 54 patients and applied laser photocoagulation to 12 of them. The mean preoperative visual acuity 0.03±0.02 (0.005-0.4), improved to 0.07±0.06 (0.005-0.5) postoperatively. The difference was found to be statistically significant. Following operation we observed improvement in vision in 44 cases (81%) were ase it decreased in 2 (3.2%) and remained the same in 8 cases (14.8%). We suggest that early diagnosis and urgent coventional surgery reveals functional improvement besides natomical succsess in myopic cases with retinal detachment.
