Incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME) following successful conventional retinal detachment surgery and factors in its evolution were investigated by fundus fluorescein angiography performed at postoperative first and third months in a group of 24 eyes of 23 patients. CME was disclosed in four of the 19 phakic eyes (21.1 %) at first postoperative month and three of 19 phakic eyes (15.8%) at third postoperative month. CME was noted in all five aphakic or psedophakic eyes having disrupted posterior capsule at first postoperative month and four eyes (80 %) had CME at third postoperative month. Overall, 11 of 24 eyes (45.8 %) developed CME during the follow-up of three months. Aphakic and pseudophakic eyes with disrupted posterior capsule were under greater risk of CME than phakic eyes following retinal detachment surgery. Age, refractive status, presence of preoperative macular detachment and postoperative photocoagulation had no effect on evolution of CME. In light of our study, it should be remembered that CME incidence following retinal detachment surgery is considerably high.
