3Beyoğlu Göz Eğitim 1. Göz Klinik Şef Yard, İstanbul Purpose: In this study,we evaluated the frequency of intraocular pressure (IOP) rise following pars plana vitrectomy(PPV), the mechanisms and its relationship with the applied surgical procedure.
Materials and Methods: Seventysix eyes of 76 patiens, which had PPV between June 2001 and August 2002 were evaluated prospectively for the IOP rise mechanisms and factors that affect this rise.
Results: Mean IOP was 12.19 ± 5.53 preoperatively, 20.34 ± 12.20 on the postoperative 1 st day, 14.62 ± 7.05 on the postoperative 1 st month and 14.51 ± 6.41 on the postoperative 6th month. The difference between the IOP on the postoperative 1 st day,1 st month, and 6th month was found to be statistically significant. Statistically significant relationship between phakia and open angle glaucoma development was also detected. Also the relation of lensectomy and silicone oil tamponade with pupillary blockage glaucoma was statistically significant.
Conclusion: Following vitrectomy, IOP rise can be seen. Lensectomy and silicone oil tamponade are more effective on IOP rise, by various mechanisms.
