2Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Hastanesi ve Göz Bankası II. Göz Klinik Şefi, Ankara Purpose: Investigating the cause and frequency of intraoperative vitroretinal surgery in retinal detachment in which conventional surgery is planned.
Materyal and Methods: Between July 2002- May 2003, conventional detachment surgery was planned for 47 eyes of 47 retinal detachment cases in (36.1%) the retina department however in 17 eyes, vitreoretinal surgery was commenced intraoperatively. Conditions requiring vitreoretinal surgery have been discussed in detail in this paper.
Results: While in 12 eyes vitreoretinal surgery was initiated due to intraoperative complications, in 5 eyes vitreoretinal surgery was necessary because retina was not visualised entirely. In one eye, scleral perforation during the cryocoagulation, in one eye retinal incarceration during the subretinal fluid drainage in two eyes vitreous hemorraghe, in one eye haemorraghic choroidal detachment, in four eyes retinal tear which could not be closed by local explant, in three eyes retinal tear due to vitreous traction and PVR were detected as causes of intraoperative complications.
Conclusion: Although conventional retinal detachment surgery is adequate in most patients with retinal detachment, the basic factors necessitating vitreoretinal surgery are intraoperative complications, PVR and the bad visualization of fundus.
