Materials and Methods: Pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy were applied to 24 eyes with dropped nucleus during phacoemulsification. 22 of the eyes were operated in the same session, while one eye 3 days and the other eye 1 week after the cataract surgery. Patients were followed up ranging between 6months to 2 years (Average: 13.3 months).
Results: Postoperative best corrected visual acuity was equal or better than 1/10 in 17 patients (%70.8). In 19 patients (%79.1) postoperative best corrected visual acuity was better than the preoperative level. There was no change in the visual acuity of 2 (%8.33) and a decrease in the visual acuity of 3 patients (%12.5). Macular edema was detected in 3 patients (%12.5) and epimacular membrane in 1 patient (%4.1).
Conclusion: Poor visual outcome, in patients with dropped nucleus during phacoemulsification can be prevented by pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy.
