Evaluation of The Effect of Hypertension on Ocular Haemodynamic Parameters with Color Doppler Ultrasonography in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
1Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları AD2Mersin Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Radyodiagnostik AD Purpose: To investigate haemodynamic changes in patients with diabetes mellitus and to investigate the effect of hypertension on these parameters.
Material and Methods: 90 patients with diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension and 30 healthy cases were included in the study. Study group consisted of 30 patients with diabetes mellitus, 30 patients with hypertension and 30 patients with both diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Color doppler ultrasonography was applied to all cases after routine ophthalmologic examination.
Results: Ophthalmic artery maximum systolic velocity, and end diastolic velocity values obtained from group 3 which consisted of hypertension patients were higher than group 1 which consisted of diabetics and also control group. Ophthalmic artery maximum systolic velocity was determined higher in group 2 which consisted of both diabetes and hypertension than control cases. Ophthalmic artery resistivity index in proliferative diabetic retinopathy subgroup was observed as significantly higher than other subgroups and control group. Central retinal artery maximum systolic velocity and end diastolic velocity values in hypertension group were significantly higher than diabetes group; there was not a significant difference from the point of these parameters in the group with both hypertension and diabetes.
Conclusion: Being a vascular pathology, hypertension is seen to affect the ocular blood flow, especially the ophthalmic artery hemodynamic parameters, more than diabetes. Keywords : Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, ocular haemodynamy, color doppler ultrasonography.
