Clinical Findings in Patients with Lamellar Macular Hole

Materials and Methods: Seventeen eyes of the 15 patients with lamellar macular hole diagnosed in our retina department between April 2006 and January 2009 were investigated retrospectively. All patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination including fluorescein angiography, autofluorescence imaging (blue and infrared light) and OCT imaging. Patients were divided into two groups according to the visual acuity; group I consisting of 9 eyes having 5/10 or worse visual acuity and group II consisting of 8 eyes having 6/10 or better visual acuity. OCT findings related to LMH diameter, foveal thickness were measured and compared.
Results: The average age of patients was 66.7±11.0 years; and 6 (40%) were men and 9 (60%) were women. Average follow-up time was 8.5 months (range; 3-27 months). The mean LMH diameter was 522.1±177.1 µm in group I and 448.1±177.9 µm in group II (p=0.481). The mean foveal thickness was measured in 88.7±25.0 µm group I and 132.1±30.3 µm in group II (p=0.015). The mean LMH diameter was found to be smaller in group II, and the mean foveal thickness was found to be thinner in group I.
Conclusion: A statistically significant association was found between foveal thickness and visual acuity in patients with LMH. Visual acuity was worse in patient having larger LMH diameter but difference was not statistically significant. Keywords : Lamellar macular hole, visual acuity, autofluorescence
