Macular Grid Laser Photocoagulation Treatment Versus Intravitreal Bevacizumab Injections for Macular Edema Secondary to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

5S. B. Ankara Eğitim ve Araştırma Hast., 2.Göz Kliniği, Ankara, Doç. Dr. Purpose: To compare the outcomes of grid laser photocoagulation and intravitreal (IV) injections of bevacizumab treatments in patients with macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
Materials and Methods: Records of 15 patients treated with grid laser photocoagulation (group 1) and 12 patients treated with IV bevacizumab injections (group 2) for macular edema secondary to BRVO reviewed retrospectively. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and central macular thickness (CMT) obtained by Stratus OCT were measured.
Results: Mean follow-up time was 9.9±3.1 months in group 1 and 13.2±7.6 months in group 2. BCVA improved significantly from 0.73±0.28 logMAR to 0.55±0.36 logMAR in grid laser photocoagulation group and 0.94±0.43 logMAR to 0.55±0.44 logMAR in IV injection group (respectively p=0.010 and p=0.011). CMT was decreased from 391.6±119.1 μm to 336.4±128.7 μm in group 1 and from 555.7±130.3 μm to 354.2±144.0 μm in group 2. In between group comparisons there were no difference in initial BCVA and BCVA change (respectively p=0.136 and p=0.155). But both initial CMT measurements and CMT improvements were statistically different (respectively p=0.003 and p=0.027). No significant correlation was found between BCVA change and CMT change in both groups.
Conclusion: IV bevacizumab injection and grid laser treatment result in significant improvement of visual acuity for patients with macular edema secondary to BRVO. Keywords : Branch retinal vein occlusion, macular edema, laser photocoagulation, bevacizumab
