Keratoprostheses in Surgery: Types and Applications
1Neoretina Kliniği, Prof Dr, İstanbul2SBÜ İstanbul Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Uzman Dr, İstanbul There are two types of keratoprostheses applied by anterior segment and vitreoretinal surgeons. Permanent keratoprostheses applied by anterior segment surgeons are used to improve vision for patients that are not candidates for corneal transplantation. In addition, vitreoretinal surgery in the posterior segment complications of permanent keratoprosthetic eyes is also possible. Surgical treatment of vitreoretinal disorders requires proper the surgeon to be able to see through a clear cornea. It?s possible to view the posterior segment by using a temporary keratoprosthesis to perform vitreoretinal surgery in eyes with corneal opacities and posterior segment pathologies. A multidisciplinary surgical approach is needed for vitreoretinal surgery, which is then followed by a corneal transplant. The use of temporary keratoprosthesis allows early vitreoretinal surgery with a clear view of the posterior segment and a closed-pressure system.
