2Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Uzm. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the clinical, fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography findings in cases with idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis.
Materials and Methods: Two eyes of two patients in Group 1B, and eight eyes of 4 patients in Group 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis according to the Gass classification were analyzed. All of the eyes underwent complete ophthalmological examination. Color fundus photographs were taken and fluorescein angiography was performed. Macular OCT scans were obtained. Fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography findings were compared and correlated with visual acuity.
Results: Six of the eight eyes of 4 patients in Group 2A had stage 4, and the remaining two eyes had stage 3 IJRT. Two eyes in Group 1B presented telangiectasis, lipid exudates, and one of them also had macular hemorrhage. Fluorescein angiography showed increased hyperfluorescence through the late phase due to staining in the outer retina. However, OCT scans demonstrated normal foveal contour without macular edema. Seven of the ten eyes had subfoveal intraretinal hyporeflective space in the absence of retinal thickening. Although the presence of similar FA and OCT findings in patients, they did not correlate with visual acuity values.
Conclusion: Subfoveal hyporeflective space despite increased hyperfluorescence in FA is a typical OCT finding in cases with IJRT. It is impossible to explain visual acuity differences with these findings. Detailed and high-resolution OCT images in large series are needed in order to define the pathogenesis of this disease.
