Pharmacologic Vitreolysis

Inducing a posterior vitreous detachment and the release of tractional forces on the retina is a major objective of vitreoretinal surgery. At present, surgical separation of the vitreous from the retina is achieved by mechanical means only. This approach may cause iatrogenic retinal breaks, retinal detachment, and nerve fiber damage. The need for a noninvasive approach to vitreoretinal disorders is being met by new methods. It would be helpful to have a pharmacologic agent that could cleave the vitreoretinal interface selectively without damaging the retina for vitreoretinal surgery. Pharmacologic vitreolysis refers to the use of agents that alter the molecular organization of vitreous leading to the separation and collapse of the vitreous away from the retina. Several enzymes have been explored for this purpose. In this article, one can find information about the agents and methods for pharmacologic vitreolysis.
