5S.B. Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Göz Hast. Kliniği, Ankara, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the results of vitreoretinal surgery in patients having posterior segment complications of chronic uveitis with varied etiologies.
Materials and Methods: Clinical records of 34 patients (37 eyes) followed at Uvea-Behçet department of Ankara Ulucanlar Eye Hospital and who underwent vitreoretinal surgery because of different complications due to uveitis were retrospectively evaluated. These cases were studied according to gender, age, diagnosis, follow-up period, preand postoperative best corrected visual acuities, medical treatments, recurrence rate of the intraocular inflammation before and after 1 year from surgery, anterior and posterior segment pathologies.
Results: Of the 34 patients, 14 were female (41.1%), and 20 were male (58.9%) with a mean age of 28.27±16.49 (6- 64) years at the time of surgery. Eleven (29.7%) eyes had intermediate uveitis, 12 (32.4%) posterior uveitis and 14 (37.8%) panuveitis. Postoperative follow-up period was 42.4±30.8 months. Postoperative visual acuity improved in 17 eyes (46%), worsened in 7 (19%) and unchanged in 13 (35%) eyes. Postoperatively, anatomic success was not achieved in 2 eyes (5,4%) and one of them (2.7%) developed phthisis bulbi. There was a statistically significant decrease in the recurrence of attacks (p <0.05) during the first year after surgery. However, medical treatment did not change (p>0.05) over the follow-up period.
Conlusions: Vitreoretinal surgery appears to have a beneficial effect on patients with posterior segment complications of chronic uveitis. Keywords : Chronic uveitis, posterior segment complications, vitreoretinal surgery
